![]() He seems distracted by concerns over how sex education is taught. Her opponent, Jonathan Hacker, has some misplaced priorities. She’ll be a valuable member of the board as it takes on a set of thorny issues generated by the pandemic. A former elementary-school teacher, she’s been a rock-solid member of the board, sensible and pragmatic. Voters should return Castor Dentel for a full four-year term. Karen Castor Dentel served a single, two-year term in the state Legislature but returned to politics in 2018 by winning this seat, which her predecessor vacated early. Scott, however, presents a clearer picture of his priorities for Orange County schools, and would make the better School Board member. Scott is thoughtful about the issues facing Orange County schools, and it’s clear he cares about young people having successful futures.Ī third candidate is Vicki-Elaine Felder, who has several decades of teaching experience and a heart for students. Scott is deeply involved in volunteer work in the community, from Scouting to county committees to other charities. This race has a better candidate in Michael “Mike” Scott, who runs a charity called Helping All Youth Achieve. It sounds like he bought an address so he can continue his political career. Antone said he rented a room inside the district in June. The address where he claims a homestead exemption is outside district boundaries. ![]() More troubling is the question of whether Antone even lives in the district where he’s running, which is required by law. He hasn’t bothered to create a website where people can go to see what he believes and what he wants to do. Antone is running as if he expects a coronation. Ordinarily, we might defer to the legislative experience of candidate Bruce Antone, a state House representative who is leaving office because of term limits. ![]() They’re running for a seat being vacated by longtime board member Kat Gordon. This is the only School Board race without an incumbent. Gould has been in the thick of it, and is in a better place to make consequential decisions that will stay with kids for years to come. The other candidate is Dayna Gaut, a former teacher and paramedic. Navy veteran, has run for different offices - county commission and Congress - before. The challengers in this race didn’t make a good enough case for unseating Gould. Gould’s eyes seem wide open about the challenges facing Orange County, and her current job in public health ought to help. It’s not a bad attribute for someone who’s making decisions that affect so many thousands of students and families. Those jobs suggest a person with empathy for those in need. Before that she headed Dave’s House, a nonprofit that helps people with mental illness get housing. Last year she was named president and CEO of Shepherd’s Hope, a system of free clinics for people who lack insurance. Gould was first elected to the board in 2012, and she has a history of serving with organizations that do good work in this area. Orange County School Board races also are single-member districts, which means only the voters who live in that district are able to cast a ballot. Experience isn’t everything, but the incumbents in these four School Board races show they have more going for them than just time on the job.Īll of the races are non-partisan, which means that contests with more than two candidates will go to a runoff in the fall if no one gets a majority of the votes. The months ahead allow little room for on-the-job training. That’s part of the reason why the Sentinel’s Editorial Board is placing a premium on experience in these School Board elections.
